God's Help Is at Hand
"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Many visitors to Christian Science Reading Rooms have found this statement in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (Pref., p. vii), both comforting and capable of proof.
One dictionary definition of the word "lean" is "to rest or rely for support, comfort." Another is "to conform in conduct." When we lean on something, we draw closer to it, and it becomes supporting and sustaining.
Our beloved Leader makes it clear that it is both desirable and necessary to walk closely with God. She writes (Message to The Mother Church for 1901, pp. 34, 35): "Godliness or Christianity is a human necessity: man cannot live without it; he has no intelligence, health, hope, nor happiness without godliness. In the words of the Hebrew writers: 'Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths;' 'and He shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.'"
