The Sunday School Blesses the Home

"Home is not a place. It is a power. Going home is doing right." These words of our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, quoted by Lyman P. Powell in his biography entitled "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait," 1950 Edition (p. 220), convey the close relationship between the home and the Sunday School. Both are working for the same goal; namely, to teach the child the importance of doing right. This blesses the home and all with whom the pupil associates.

Each part of the Sunday School hour is valuable in contributing to this teaching and therefore should be carried out correctly. Procedure for the session is outlined by our Leader in the Order of Exercises for the Sunday School of The Mother Church and Branch Churches, on page 127 of the Manual of The Mother Church, which should be followed without deviation. The opening hymn is usually one written by Mrs. Eddy, chosen because of its spiritualizing effect on thought.

The subject of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly is then announced by the superintendent. Pupils repeat the Golden Text either from memory or by reading it from the Quarterly. The very words "Golden Text" indicate its true value. It epitomizes the entire Lesson-Sermon. The Responsive Reading is read alternately by the superintendent and by the teachers and pupils.
