GIVING IS THE ESSENCE OF LIVING

At one time I had to make a choice between two offers of employment. As I prayed to God for guidance in making a decision, the thought came very clearly to me, "Go where you can give the most." It was very evident in which place I could give the most, and although I had leaned toward taking the other position, I followed this guidance. Subsequent unfoldment proved the great wisdom of the step I took.

This was the beginning of my awareness that giving is the essence of living. It was some time before giving became a natural impetus in my life; but through the years, in studying and practicing Christian Science, I have gradually been able to make giving dominate my living.

Giving is an art, and it takes practice to break the bonds of selfish, material living and arrive at the point where one thinks naturally of others. Many individuals today have been reared and educated to think selfishly. Because of modern inventions, which make for ease in living and comfort and pleasure for self, an individual is likely to think first of how he can make himself comfortable, how he can entertain himself, how he can get the most of something for himself.
