LAYING A FOUNDATION IN CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
No structure is any sounder or more stable than its foundation. For this reason, the engineer makes borings and conducts bearing tests to make sure that his foundation can be set on a stable foundation bed.
Laying a foundation in Christian Science, is a spiritual experience. The first step in spiritual building begins with a desire to know the truth, a willingness to be taught. Humility is the firm bed on which one may set a good foundation. The real searcher for Truth stops telling God how he wants things done and starts listening for divine Love to tell him what to do. He recognizes that to be a Scientist he will have to study and carefully put into practice what he has learned from his study.
A good textbook is indispensable to any scientific study, and a wise student will choose only that textbook written by a recognized authority on the subject. To choose a textbook written by someone who is more interested in his own personal opinions than in the subject he is supposed to be teaching is worse than to waste time and money; it may lead one down a blind alley and ruin his brightest hopes.
