At the beginning of my study...

At the beginning of my study of Christian Science in 1957 I was not conscious of any particular physical or mental problem, nor did I believe my way of living was wrong. However, the perusal of the Biblical account of the prodigal son, which is found in the fifteenth chapter of Luke, unfolded to me why the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, had come to me. I read it from cover to cover.

I then decided to attend the next service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, in my community. While attending this Sunday service, I became ill; but I was sustained by what I heard, and I was able to stay until the close of the service. The next week I started to read the Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly, and I attended the Wednesday evening testimony meeting. Since then, I have not missed a Sunday service or a Wednesday meeting.

For nearly fifteen years I had smoked, and while I smoked, I enjoyed it. I also drank whisky, beer, and wine, and I believed I enjoyed them. I took advantage of business situations that were not entirely honest, and I was selfish.
