Signs of the Times

Rev. David Browne Pearson in a column of The Chagrin Falls Exponent Chagrin Falls, Ohio

The Christmas spirit means in all literalness the declaration of a moratorium forever on man's inhumanity to man. It means an eternal end to all selfishness, injustice and ill-will... If you keep [Christmas] for a day, why not always? In other words, make it perpetual, permanent and not something of the moment transient.

On Christmas morning I would like to... ask two questions. First, what did you get? Did you get a deeper understanding of the meaning of Christmas? Did you get a little time to think what it meant to the world that a baby boy was born in Bethlehem ... years ago? Did you get a new sense of joy that you yourself were a child of God? Did you get a new realization and opportunity to make that message live in your life? Then you know the meaning and reality of real religion. The other question I would like to ask on Christmas morning is not, what did you get in the way of material things, but, what did you give this Christmas worthy of the Birthday of Jesus?
