Church Dedications

The Sumter Daily Item

Sumter, South Carolina (Society).

Dedication services were held yesterday by Christian Science Society, Sumter, South Carolina... The first service was held in the new building in April, 1956... At the two services, morning and afternoon, a history of the society was read by the chairman of the dedication committee.

The society had its beginning in 1945 when several friends began meeting weekly to read the Lesson-Sermons [outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly]. A similar group was reading in another home. These two groups joined

A room in the home of one of the group was offered as a place to hold services, and later as the group grew, another room in the home was given over for the children, up to 20 years, to attend Sunday School. At this time Wednesday evening testimony meetings were held once a month.

In 1951, rooms rented above a downtown Main Street store were made ready for church services and Sunday School. ... These rooms were occupied for four and a half years. During the first year the group was recognized by The Mother Church as Christian Science Society, Sumter.—The Sumter Daily Item (December 14, 1959).
