Our patriotic duty
“Praying for a country is the very essence of good citizenship”
Praying for one’s country’s divine guidance in the exercise of its elective franchise is a patriotic duty. Christianly scientific prayer for the furtherance of government motivated by the will of Almighty God bears fruit. Such prayer turns thought away from human personality to divine Principle, Love, the source of all true intelligence. To the degree that they are guided by divine Principle, men and nations are free from the pressures of human will. Citizens in many countries can exercise freedom to vote. Under the guidance of divine wisdom, they can protect the spiritual and moral rights of the individual.
Mrs. Eddy points to the necessity of praying for our country. She writes, “Pray that the divine presence may still guide and bless our chief magistrate, those associated with his executive trust, and our national judiciary; give to our congress wisdom, and uphold our nation with the right arm of His righteousness” (Christian Science versus Pantheism, p. 14).
