In 1921 I suffered a nervous breakdown accompanied by constant headaches. My mother spent a small fortune in taking me to specialists and in carrying out the treatments they recommended.
But I grew no better and was assured that I would never be able to follow the profession I longed for, that of teaching. I was told I must not try to read, to sew, to knit, or to do any close work at all. At length an operation on my nose and throat was advised in order to try to relieve me.
At this juncture a dear member of my family came home for a vacation and implored me not to be operated upon as she had been told of a wonderful new way of healing disease. She had found Christian Science. So I had a look at the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but the contents seemed to me then quite ridiculous, and I did not read it through.
