What a wonderful possession is...

What a wonderful possession is a knowledge of Christian Science! It enriches our lives in every instance when its teachings are rightly applied. My cup is full and running over with the blessings of the truths taught by Christ Jesus and revealed to this age by Mary Baker Eddy in the textbook, Science and Health.

On page 207 of the textbook, Mrs. Eddy says: "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause."

More than a year ago I became suddenly ill in the night. There were severe head and body pains, but no diagnosis was made, and no name was given to the error. I tried to handle my own case, but after a day or so a Christian Science practitioner was called. This loving and consecrated person made many trips to my bedside and did much prayerful work for me. My physical needs were attended to by friends.

A few months previous to this illness, an experience with a brother had left a deep hurt and much resentment. One night, while I was unable to sleep, it came to me so clearly that he too was actually a precious child of God and not the erroneous picture my mortal thinking had produced. Immediately I felt a release and such an overflowing sense of love for him that I burst into tears. That was the turning point.

Although this was not a quick healing and complications arose, through my firm stand to rely wholly on Christian Science for help, I was healed within a few weeks. With the healing came also an increased love for Christian Science and for its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy.

The hymns were so helpful during this time, as was the statement from Science and Health (p. 275) : "All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love."

Shortly after this healing, my hair began to fall out. I felt much concern over this condition because I am employed and meet the public daily. One evening, while I was shampooing my hair, large handfuls came out, and I found myself expressing much fear and showing the hair to a friend who was with me. She grasped me by the shoulders, shook me, and said: "What are you seeing, a bald mortal or a perfect child of God? Stop accepting this as real and know what you actually are!"

Nothing more was said, but after retiring I prayed earnestly, remembering to be grateful for the recent healing and knowing nothing unlovely could be the outcome of such a demonstration of the power of Truth. From that night, the hair stopped coming out, and in a few months sufficient hair had grown in so that I could have a permanent wave. The hair continued to grow rapidly, and I have as much hair now as I had before the illness.

Many blessings have been mine since I became a student of Christian Science, including the healings of grief at the passing of a loved one and of open sores on both ankles. I know that "with God all things are possible" (Mark 10:27).

Membership in The Mother Church, the joy of working with other Scientists in a branch church, and a greater spiritual understanding of the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus through the study of Mrs. Eddy's writings increase my desire to be a more loving and grateful Christian Scientist.— (Mrs.) Anna Belle Doveton, Wichita, Kansas.
