In was in 1890 that my mother first heard of Christian Science, and she immediately sought help for me. I first began to walk when I was eleven months old, but I ceased walking five months later. There was no apparent reason for this, but later it was learned that the girl who was caring for me at that time had let me fall. My mother took me to the family doctor, who diagnosed the trouble as a bruise. When I failed to improve after three months, I was taken to a specialist, and he said it was hin disease.

The specialist ordered me to be confined to my crib with a weight attached to my leg. He visited the home frequently, but at the end of six months he despaired of my life and said that I would not live more than a month.

My mother was a very religious woman ; so she turned to God in prayer and asked to be shown how to help me. The following day she went to visit a friend, who told her of a new religion that healed through prayer. My mother was told that there was a place called a Christian Science Reading Room, and here she could learn the facts about this religion.
