Activities for the Armed Services

In 1952 a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship gave a lecture under the auspices of The Mother Church to service personnel in Korea. Five Christian Scientists who were Chaplains in the Armed Forces, and who were in that country at the time, assisted with the lecture arrangements. A Christian Science Sunday service preceded the lecture and a Workshop meeting followed it. At the latter, an opportunity was provided for all to share helpful healing experiences and to find better methods of meeting the needs of Christian Scientists in Korea, which was at that time torn by war. About one hundred servicemen attended these functions.

Almost every year since this first conference in Korea, Christian Science Chaplains have held similar ones in Korea and in Japan. Those held in Japan have used the edifice of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Tokyo; whereas those held in Korea have used United States Army facilities.

In 1958 three conferences were held in Korea and one in Japan. In general these have begun on Friday evening with a Christian Science testimony meeting, held in accordance with the Order of Services provided for Wednesday meetings in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy.
