Before we were married, Christian Science...
Before we were married, Christian Science was demonstrated in the home of my wife and also in my home, first by our parents and later by our own prayerful work. Now it is our great privilege to witness this healing power in our own family.
Two days before we were to leave on a long-planned camping trip, the youngest of our four children—a two-and-one-half-year-old boy—awakened with a badly infected thumb. My wife and I prayed to know that this child was in reality the pure manifestation of God, and•as such he did not reflect anything unlike his heavenly Father.
However, as the evidence grew worse, we turned to a Christian Science practitioner for help, while we held to Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 463 of Science and Health which says, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive."
On the day we had planned to depart, I arrived home from the office to find everything in readiness. Apparently not one member of the family had considered delaying the trip because of the infection. I noted too that although the child guarded his finger, he apparently felt no discomfort. I prayed for guidance. I saw that staying at home could not help the situation.
It came clearly to me that God cares for His children everywhere, that He is as near in the remotest area as He is in a large city. At length, I determined to proceed with the trip as planned. However, I had many suggestions to meet, and I spent a restless first night in camp. Over and over I declared: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart ; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov. 3:5, 6).
Next morning the plans for the day's activities interested me very little, and immediately after breakfast I drove to the nearest telephone to discuss the situation with the practitioner. I told her that I had had my misgivings about taking the trip and that I felt something must be done about the matter without further delay.
The practitioner was so clear and positive in her assurance of man's perfection as a child of God that all fear left me at that moment, and I returned to camp. When I arrived, my wife informed me that the swollen finger had opened and drained.
Since we were camping outdoors, it seemed wise to protect the wound with a bandage. I took the child to a physician in a nearby town to have the wound dressed. I was told that the infection was localized, but the wound was serious and would require a long time to heal. No medication was applied. Within a week new skin had formed, and the bandage was removed with no ill effects. I know now that it was fear that had temporarily delayed the healing and that when the fear on my part had been rebuked, the child was free.
My gratitude for growth made possible through active membership in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and for class instruction knows no bounds.—Roger F. Wurtz, Kentfield, California.
