"CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD"

There are many verses in the Bible which use the phrase "call on the name of the Lord." One of these reads (Joel 2:32), "It shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered."

What does it mean to "call on the name of the Lord"? Some dictionary meanings of "call" are "to appeal to" and "to bring into action." To "call on the name of the Lord" means therefore to appeal to the nature of Almighty God and to bring this nature into action through reflecting it.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy describes God as follows (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Further on, in answer to the question, "Are these terms synonymous?" she continues: "They are. They refer to one absolute God. They are also intended to express the nature, essence, and wholeness of Deity."
