THE SAVING POWER OF SPIRITUAL STILLNESS

The history of the children of Israel, recorded in the Old Testament, illustrates the protection which is assured those who turn to God with quiet trust in His willingness and ability to care for all who seek Him. Time and again, in their journey through the wilderness, the Israelites were faced with seemingly overwhelming difficulties which threatened to annihilate them. Yet when Moses turned their thoughts to God, their deliverance was assured.

On one occasion, they seemed hemmed in. The Red Sea was before them and the pursuing Egyptians were behind them. When there seemed to be no evident means of deliverance, Moses said (Ex. 14:13), "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever."

The great need of the world today, especially of those who seem oppressed or caught in islands of isolation with no apparent way of escape, is the stillness, the firmness of thought which accompanies the assurance of man's inseparable unity with God.
