Shortly after I married, I was stricken with a serious throat difficulty which confined me to my home. My husband was serving in the Army. I was employed and living with my mother, who is a consecrated Christian Scientist. At my request she called a Christian Science practitioner to do prayerful metaphysical work for me when we realized that our own understanding of the truth was not sufficient to overcome the manifestation.

For two weeks the condition grew steadily worse and was accompanied by a great deal of pain. One evening, when asked if I wanted the practitioner to come to visit me, I felt compelled to take a stand; so since I could not speak, I wrote that I should like to go to the home of the practitioner. I shall never forget the tenderness and love expressed by this dear woman during the hour or so that I was with her.

I returned home with my consciousness filled with the truth of my real selfhood as an idea of God, made in His image and likeness, for I knew Him to be Life, Truth, and Love. I also felt a great assurance of the all-encompassing love of our Father-Mother God.
