Shortly after beginning the...

Shortly after beginning the study of Christian Science, I had all the symptoms of kidney trouble. The pain and discomfort were severe. I was living in a rented room in a city far from home. Although I was tempted to take medicine, I studied the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and tried to apply the truths I read to myself. Days passed without relief. Finally, I bought some medicine with the thought that if the condition did not improve, I would take it.

Late that night, alone in my room, I awoke in great pain. On a table beside the bed lay the pills and a copy of Science and Health. I reached for the pills, but just as I touched them, I said aloud: "No. Christian Science is the Word of God, and I will rely on it."

I tossed the pills into the farthest corner of the room and picked up the textbook. Through tears, I would read a sentence, then repeat it aloud. One line stood out. It reads (p. 469), "We bury the sense of infinitude, when we admit that, although God is infinite, evil has a place in this infinity, for evil can have no place, where all space is filled with God."

I considered the fact that since God is good, harmony and health really filled the place where the pain seemed to be; so there was no place for pain or a diseased condition to exist. This glimpse of the allness of God brought a quick casing of the pain. Within twenty minutes, I was asleep. In the morning, I awoke refreshed and completely free. This took place seventeen years ago, and the difficulty has never recurred.

Before studying Christian Science, I was subject to colds and throat trouble. Twice I had had throat operations which did not eliminate the difficulty. Simply by my reading the Christian Science textbook, this trouble was eliminated.

On the infrequent occasions when a cold has appeared during the last fifteen years, it has been healed promptly, several times in a matter of minutes. Of great help was Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health which reads (p. 496), "Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being." And in the Bible, I found this verse helpful (Rom. 8:16): "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God."

After I had spent twenty minutes in earnest study and prayer, a blister on a badly burned hand disappeared. A dislocated shoulder snapped back into place within minutes after a practitioner was called and was asked to give prayerful help. On various occasions lost articles have been returned when the integrity of God's child as the only real man was established in my consciousness.

A painful knee condition was healed through prayer in one day. When I realized the perfection of God's creation, the sting of a poisonous insect caused no swelling or pain. When I declared the truth of man as God's reflection, a finger which had been caught in a slammed car door was freed from pain at once, and all effect of injury disappeared in a few days.

Quite often a seemingly small healing has given me the courage and reassurance needed to solve a bigger problem. These inspiring experiences have taught me that we are not alone, abandoned by God in a world fraught with danger, fear, and lack. He is always with us, guarding and guiding, so near and so loving that lifting our thought to Him enables us to be free from any belief of separation from good, whether it seems to be disease, sin, or death.

I thank God for Mrs. Eddy's clear perception of Truth and for her unselfish, unwavering work in giving this truth to the world. I am grateful for class instruction and for the annual association meeting. I find my happiness increases as my spiritual understanding grows. Truly Christian Science supplies the proof that God's goodness is infinite and ever present!— (Mrs.) Lowis Carlton, West Miami, Florida.
