OBSTRUCTIVE BELIEFS YIELD TO TRUTH
One of the conditions which interferes with the progress of mankind is obstruction: obstruction in bodily functioning, in human relationships, in the pursuit of business, in national and international affairs. Christian Science shows clearly how this hindrance to man's health, happiness, and prosperity can be overcome.
In Christian Science we learn that all obstruction originates in the acceptance of the belief that man is born into matter and is separated from God, Spirit. This false belief has been perpetuated by the acceptance as true of the allegory of Adam and Eve in the second and third chapters of Genesis.
In this Science we also learn that the name "Adam," when divided into two syllables, represents a dam or obstruction. Mary Baker Eddy writes of the belief of life in matter as follows (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 338): "Here a dam is not a mere play upon words; it stands for obstruction, error, even the supposed separation of man from God, and the obstacle which the serpent, sin, would impose between man and his creator."
