LOVE WALKS WITH THE HUMBLE

MARY BAKER EDDY, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, placed humility high on the list of virtues needed if we are to serve God faithfully. She tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 354), "Experience shows that humility is the first step in Christian Science, wherein all is controlled, not by man or laws material, but by wisdom, Truth, and Love."

Humility changes the heart as nothing else can; but our prayers alone will not make us humble. We must work for humility until we are controlled by wisdom, Truth, and Love. And when we practice humility, we do not lose our dignity or self-respect as mortal mind would have us believe.

But what really constitutes humility, one might ask? Humility includes the ability and willingness to estimate oneself rightly, to know oneself as the perfect expression of God, divine Love. And in order to estimate how much of this true selfhood one is manifesting, it is good to start with self-examination, perhaps asking such questions as these: Have I pleased our Father this day? Have I expressed love to my neighbor? Have I glorified Him in whose name I act? Have I given something of myself, expecting nothing in return? Did I speak gently, lovingly, as I should wish to have been spoken to? Did I allow personal sense to cloud my thinking at any time?
