From childhood on, I grew up...

From childhood on, I grew up with a great fear of being alone, especially at night. Because of this fear, I suffered both physically and mentally and leaned heavily on members of my family, and after marriage, on my husband.

Throughout these years I read many books on the subject of fear with the hope of overcoming this torment. While visiting a friend, I was informed of Christian Science; and an invitation was extended to me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. This I did. I was greatly impressed and felt the fervent desire to know more of this Science. I then secured the Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and commenced to study earnestly.

During a visit to a Christian Science practitioner the nature of my difficulty was disclosed. I was advised to study this passage from the Bible (II Tim. 1:7): "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." I was also asked to study "Retrospection and Introspection" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 61): "Science saith to fear, 'You are the cause of all sickness; but you are a self-constituted falsity,—you are darkness, nothingness. You are without "hope, and without God in the world." You do not exist, and have no right to exist, for "perfect Love casteth out fear" ' "; and the definition of God as given on page 587 of Science and Health.
