I had been reared in a Christian home and had attended services in an orthodox church each Sunday from the time I was a small child. However, after marrying and going into my own home, I soon began to question the teaching that God, whom I was expected to love and honor, sends sickness, disaster, and grief to His children. So I absented myself from church and just lived the best I knew how.

Over forty years ago, when my twin boys were babies, they were taken with whooping cough. Dire predictions, made by well-meaning acquaintances, concerned me deeply; so I turned to some Christian Science friends whom I had known for years.

It was lovingly pointed out to me that help was available in Christian Science. I was given passages to read from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and was told to accept as much as I could understand.
