CASTING OUT THE BEAM

[Original in French]

Christ Jesus' words (Matt. 7:3), "Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" are often interpreted as alluding to the habit of criticism among individuals or groups. However, the Master may very well have intended to draw attention to the mental factors within the individual which claim to hinder him from experiencing harmony, confidence, and joy, which contribute to happiness.

Wherever materialistic tendencies take the place of confidence in God and love for spiritual ideas, hindrances to spiritual vision seem to exist. Thus the great majority of humanity is still deprived of the advantages which would be afforded by a scientific understanding of eternal values and by a sincere faith in the power deriving from the unity existing between God and man.

But Christian Science places at mankind's disposal a wealth of resources. In these may be found whatever is needed to remove the beams from the eyes of men so that they may perceive that which has been symbolically prophesied by Isaiah (33:17), "Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off." Is it necessary to add that this prospect is more attractive than the prospect of misery and terror which current events indicate is in store for mankind?
