The Church Manual and the Sunday School

"The Rules and By-laws in the Manual of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, originated not in solemn conclave as in ancient Sanhedrim. They were not arbitrary opinions nor dictorial demands, such as one person might impose on another. They were impelled by a power not one's own, were written at different dates, and as the occasion required." These are the words of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 148), and they express the deep humility of one impelled by divine power.

Mrs. Eddy saw and understood the importance of the Sunday School when she included in the Manual of The Mother Church Article XX, which provides for the children to be instructed in Christian Science and designates the lessons which shall be taught. A plan of procedure for the Order of Exercises for the Sunday School of The Mother Church and for branch churches is found on page 127. These requirements should be faithfully followed.

Consecration, prayer, study, and research are required to prepare the teacher's thought. He should be willing to devote a suitable amount of time to preparation for the class. He should have a clear understanding of the requirements of Article XX of the Manual.
