My first testimony appeared in...
My first testimony appeared in the Sentinel of April 12, 1924. Since then I have had so many proofs of God's loving care that I wish to express my heartfelt thanks again for the blessings that have been bestowed upon me through the continuous study and application of Christian Science. It is my hope that my experiences may be of some encouragement to others.
During a financial depression my accumulated savings of several years were wiped out overnight, and I was obliged to start over again. This was made more difficult because the profession for which I had been educated before I took up Christian Science was not in harmony with my new way of thinking.
It took some time to work out the problems of finding my right place and gaining the true sense of supply and security. But through the conscientious application of the truths learned in Christian Science and with the help of loving practitioners from time to time, I was richly and abundantly rewarded with a complete demonstration of harmony.
This verse from the Scriptures was constantly in my thoughts (Job 28:23): "God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof." And this statement by our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, gave further assurance (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 232): "The right way wins the right of way, even the way of Truth and Love whereby all our debts are paid, mankind blessed, and God glorified."
The use of the Concordances to the Bible and to Mrs. Eddy's writings helped me greatly to gain a clearer spiritual understanding. I was especially grateful during this trying time for class instruction and for the inspiration received by regular attendance at the annual association meetings.
Great spiritual growth came to me when I had the privilege of serving as an associate in the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Several visits as a guest to the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast have given me inspiration and spiritual refreshment. My deep gratitude goes out for these places which have been provided for quiet rest, study, and healing. My sincere thanks are expressed also for the help of loving Christian Science practitioners.
Several physical healings have proved to me that Christian Science heals the sick both quickly and permanently. I have found true Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized."
An infected finger was healed one evening while I was in a Christian Science Reading Room; an abscess in one ear was healed in two treatments; tonsillitis and influenza, which had recurred every winter for some years, were healed permanently. Fatigue, fallen arches, and other difficulties have disappeared completely.
For membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and for the joy of serving, especially in the Sunday School, I am very thankful. Health and happiness, as well as peace of mind, have greatly enriched my experience.—(Miss) Esther B. Lucas, Vallejo, California.
Humbly and gratefully I give this testimony of blessings which my family and I have experienced through Christian Science. Before I began the study of this Science, I had frequent attacks of headache. I no longer have this difficulty. I attribute this healing to my daily study of our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and to further earnest study of the Bible and of our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
I was frequently troubled with rheumatism, which confined me to my bed. These attacks continued after I began the study of Christian Science, but through Christian Science treatment I was healed.
While two members of the family and I were en route home from a vacation, our car broke down. Night was upon us, and we were miles from a garage or telephone. As we were sitting in the car, there came to my thought a few words from one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns (Poems, p. 79),
"It matters not what be thy lot,
So Love doth guide."
A member of our party went to a nearby house. The people in this home invited us to spend the night. The next morning they asked us to breakfast and then took us several miles to a garage where we could get help. They refused all offers of pay. We felt that Love had indeed guided us.
At one time the people who were cultivating our farm predicted that there was a possibility of the soybean crop's being lost. At once I began work in Christian Science to protect the crop. I am very grateful to say that through the realization of God's presence and power the crop was saved. Through my understanding of and work in Science, vegetables in my garden were protected from moles.
I am grateful that Christian Science has given me an understanding of man's relationship to God and has brought me many good friends. For class instruction, for our yearly association meetings, and for all the avenues Mrs. Eddy provided for our progress in Christian Science, I am truly grateful. —(Mrs.) Mary Hendrix, East St. Louis, Illinois.
