I was brought up in a home...
I was brought up in a home where Christian Science alone was relied on for healing, and I wish to express my gratitude for the benefits this religion has brought me. The greatest of these has undoubtedly been the awakening to the reality of spiritual existence and to the way in which this understanding may be exercised intelligently in human affairs to help improve conditions around one. Undoubtedly the foundational training I received as a child, both in my home and in the Christian Science Sunday School, laid a sound basis for subsequent study over a period of more than thirty years.
For many years I was subject to airsickness under even mild conditions of disturbance. During World War II, whilst I was serving as an administrative officer with the Royal Air Force in the tropics, this condition was very inconvenient. Despite some measure of alleviation as a result of treating myself in Christian Science, it continued to make traveling by air a matter of distaste.
On my return to Australia I had the privilege of having class instruction. With the increased understanding gained from this experience I was more successful in treating myself. On one air trip of five hours' duration I worked prayerfully for some two hours, and I gained a clear glimpse of man's true environment in Spirit, outside of material laws and conditions.
I felt on this trip that I was healed of airsickness, and subsequent travel has proved this to be so. I am happy to say that air flights are now a matter of enjoyment to me.
Another incident of healing for which I am grateful occurred during a period of special activity. I found myself becoming subject to a cold with noticeable symptoms. I was working in an office where anything of that nature was quickly and repeatedly commented on; so without delay I began to work to overcome these obvious symptoms.
It appeared to me that I should claim my God-ordained right to freedom from erroneous mental influence of any kind. It was clear to me that the condition was wholly mental and that the situation was therefore to be met wholly in the realm of belief.
The subject of that week's Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly was "Soul." As I pondered the truths the lesson set forth, it came to me that the freedom of Soul is man's true freedom. I knew that I was in reality the child of God and reflected this freedom of Soul. As I strongly as asserted this fact, the physical condition rapidly cleared, and the full healing took place.
I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her work as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and to the practitioners who have so faithfully and generously responded to my calls for help. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for service in a branch church, and for class instruction—Warwick L. Harbutt,Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
