During World War II, while...

During World War II, while serving as an officer in the Navy, I was hospitalized for a serious and painful physical condition of the neck and one shoulder. After a week of treatment, I was transferred to a large naval hospital for further diagnosis, surgery, and therapy.

The doctors did all they could for me, but the condition, which involved a loss of control of certain muscles, was not cured. After several weeks the picture became very discouraging, and finally in desperation I prayed to be shown the way out of my difficulty.

In a few days the opportunity was given me to go home on a short leave before resuming further treatment at the hospital. On my arrival home my prayer was answered. My wife had just been given a few copies of the Sentinel by her favorite saleswoman in a department store. They were brought home and placed without comment where I would be likely to pick one up. The first article I read presented God as omnipresent Love. Its clear logic made good sense to me. The other articles and testimonies were then read, and we decided there was real hope in Christian Science for my recovery.
