THE LORD'S PRAYER AND THE HUMAN NEED

From the earliest years of the Christian church, the Lord's Prayer has formed an important part of Christian worship. This beloved prayer has served as a common meeting ground for Christians of all sects and denominations.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this fact clear in the following statement (Pulpit and Press, p. 22): "All Christian churches have one bond of unity, one nucleus or point of convergence, one prayer,—the Lord's Prayer. It is matter for rejoicing that we unite in love, and in this sacred petition with every praying assembly on earth,—'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.'"

Christians who through the centuries have repeated "this sacred petition" with reverent sincerity have gained a measure of comfort, peace of mind, and guidance. It remained for Christian Science, however, to reveal the wider scope of the efficacy of the Lord's Prayer.
