THE JOYFUL WAY

Much has been said regarding the narrow way of Life, which Christ Jesus taught and which he recommended to his followers. It is obvious, however, that his words have not been correctly understood by many, for it is often said that this way is too strict and demanding and not conducive to happiness.

Jesus said of the ideal way (Matt. 7:13, 14), "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." He spoke of the joy of this way when he said to his disciples (John 16:22), "I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you."

Mary Baker Eddy discovered the rules whereby Jesus' teachings may be used scientifically and practically to prove that fullness of joy is a natural concomitant of following the narrow way. She writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 151): "All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of Truth."
