SPIRITUAL CONSCIOUSNESS

It is evident to any thoughtful person that the human being is conscious of much that the five physical senses cannot perceive. He is conscious of spiritual substance in the degree of his genuine love of good. One can assure himself of the possession of real consciousness by the simple process of noting to what extent true substance—integrity, intelligence, joy, love—is more real to him than matter and its qualities, which mortals express.

Christian Science explains that man has spiritual consciousness only and that one's awareness of the ideas and elements of God, Spirit, is evidence that one's real manhood is coming to light. For man, according to the Scriptures, is made in the image and likeness of God. Mary Baker Eddy speaks of this relationship in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where she says (p. 276), "Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God."

Things that are correlated are so connected that one directly implies the other. God is one Mind, according to Scriptural teaching and to Christian Science, and divine Mind is infinite consciousness, which is reflected in individual consciousness, or man. One without the other is unthinkable.
