PROGRESS: THE LAW OF GOD

"Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power," declares Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 233). She then points out: "These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil."

Each one's progress depends upon his willingness to have that Mind in him "which was also in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5). Progress must take place mentally before it becomes apparent in human affairs. A progressive thinker does not allow himself to dwell upon suffering and limitation. He claims good as a present reality. He maintains a mental alertness which reflects the divine Mind. He stands firmly with the truth in the face of any belief and thereby proves man's dominion.

Progressive thought requires a developing appreciation of God as good and of man as the recipient of God's goodness. Whatever manifests itself as a useful, human possession is but the outward manifestation, apprehensible to human thought, of the largess of God. God's bounty is an expression of God's love. As spiritual understanding bases our love for God and for our fellow men, we more fully appreciate the good that is God. When we progress to the state of thought in which we see all mankind included in God's love, when the heart overflows with gratitude for the bountifulness of God's provision for man, then His overflowing love reaches others to save and to heal.
