BALANCE

"What are you afraid of, Mother? We did our work in Christian Science, didn't we?" These words of a young child so roused his mother's thought from doubt and fear that the healing of a badly infected finger began immediately for the child. The weight of the mother's thinking shifted from the scale of fear to that of faith in the power of God, good, to heal the discordant condition.

Although the mother and the child had prayed both audibly and silently for several days to see clearly the perfection and goodness of God and His creation, man, the healing had not resulted. The child's simple statement caused the mother instantly to allow gratitude and love to outweigh fear and discouragement. The immediacy of the resultant healing was cause for even more gratitude.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 392): "Fear, which is an element of all disease, must be cast out to readjust the balance for God. Casting out evil and fear enables truth to outweigh error." Alertness at all times to keep our thinking on the side of God is most important. If one expects in his daily experience to demonstrate God's power to outweigh error, can he afford to devote only a small amount of his thinking to gaining an increasingly higher understanding of Him?
