While on active service during...

While on active service during the Second World War, I received a spinal injury for which I was granted a disability pension. In postwar years the condition gradually worsened, and the annual pronouncement of the medical board's examining officer was that little could be done for me medically beyond giving me hospitalization if and when it was required. I feared that I would be a useless cripple, and frustration and bitterness insidiously crept into my thinking.

Some four years ago the situation reached a climax. I was desperate and needed something more than the prospect of an increased pension and human sympathy. I did not realize it at the time, but what was lacking was an understanding of God to guide me out of the wilderness of cynicism in which I had become lost. The problem was how to ask help from my heavenly Father when I had so thoughtlessly neglected Him for many years.

At this time my wife, who was a dedicated student of Christian Science, lovingly gave me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Largely to please her I commenced to read, although with mental reservation and skepticism. Happily, however, I glimpsed in the pages the help I needed. I read and reread the textbook straight through six consecutive times. Slowly, the peace which I so greatly needed came over me. The power of Truth and Love began to overcome the unlovely traits of character which were weighing me down, and fear of increasing physical disharmony evaporated.
