"FEED THE FAMISHED AFFECTIONS"

Mary Baker Eddy gives the spiritual interpretation of the petition in the Lord's Prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matt. 6:11), as, "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17). This interpretation shows an awareness of one of humanity's crying needs, a need far in excess of that of material things.

These compassionate words, "feed the famished affections," may well be applied to the longing heart, searching for affection yet unfound, and to the grieving heart, yearning for affection believed to be lost. The answer to both these prayers for love is Love. Love capitalized denotes in Christian Science a synonym for God. Affections may be famished; Love never is. Therefore Love alone can feed the famished human affections.

Mankind in its very natural search for love is really yearning and searching for God without knowing it. If men realized the truth that God is Love, they would turn wholeheartedly to Him for love instead of seeking for it among the children of men. It is mankind's tendency to personalize both good and evil. By personalizing Love, men rob themselves in belief of its infinite, ever-present nature.
