When my wife and I began the...
When my wife and I began the study of Christian Science, many years ago, we did not feel we were in need of healing. I had an excellent position, and our health was very good. We turned to Christian Science because of dissatisfaction with the orthodox faith into which we had been born; neither of us was able to accept the Supreme Being as a God of punishment.
My first proof of the efficacy of Christian Science came shortly after I had begun attending a branch church and had started reading the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. As a child I had been taught by my mother that rain, wet feet, and wet clothing would bring on a head cold. Leaving my office one day, I was caught in a sudden, violent thunder shower. I was without raincoat, umbrella, or rubbers. In a matter of moments I was drenched to the skin. Of course, my mother's warning came to me.
Instantly, however, it was opposed in my thought by the truths I had begun to learn in Christian Science. Standing quite still in the rain, I declared the truth. I noted some sparrows playing in the street puddles, and I knew that they were completely free from head colds. A lamppost on the corner was glistening wet, but I knew it did not have a cold. I declared that since there is no sensation in matter, without mortal mind my body could no more catch cold than the iron lamppost could, and I denied that mortal mind could overrule Truth. Needless to relate, there were no ill effects for me; and the fear of wet feet was destroyed.
