"God is our refuge and strength,...

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). This help of ever-present Love I have experienced many times.

One night in January, 1953, our family was sleeping peacefully when I heard a fire alarm and voices near our house. A violent storm had come up in the night. Looking out of the window I saw the water of the river harbor, near which our house is situated, flooding the houses on the opposite side. My first thought was one of fear, but then the angel thought came to me (Ps. 23:1, 2): "The Lord is my shepherd. ... He leadeth me beside the still waters."

I became quite calm, for I realized that God did not send the storm. My husband, who had also awakened, joined me in doing some prayerful protective work. Then we returned to bed, and so safe did we feel that we left our elder daughter, who was sleeping downstairs, in her bed and did not even speak of taking her upstairs.
