SOARING ASPIRATIONS

Birds flying have excited the envy of earth-bound mortals, have delighted poets, and have served as symbols of upward-soaring thought to those who are religiously minded. The author of the first chapter of Genesis wrote, "God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven."

In her interpretation of this verse Mary Baker Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 511, 512), "The fowls, which fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven, correspond to aspirations soaring beyond and above corporeality to the understanding of the incorporeal and divine Principle, Love."

When one finds through Christian Science that real life is not earth-bound, not tied to flesh, not dependent upon matter for continuity, not subject to death, one feels a measure of release from earthliness. His thoughts rise naturally to higher realms of consciousness than they have known before. His interests change; they leave self for God and His perfect creation of ideas. An upsurge of joy supports higher aspirations as one seeks to prove Love's allness and man's perfect selfhood in Spirit's likeness. One finds this upward flight zestful and satisfying, energizing and expanding.
