THE TEXTBOOK WHICH HEALS

WHY does reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, heal? The answer to this question lies in a consideration of the origin of the book. This book is not the product of mere scholarly human research. It is the result of divine revelation.

In the year 1866, while Mrs. Eddy was reading of Jesus' restoration of the palsied man, as recorded in the ninth chapter of Matthew, the healing truth dawned upon her spiritually receptive consciousness, and she was healed of an injury considered fatal by her physicians. Thus she discovered the Science of divine healing.

For the next three years, Mrs. Eddy searched the Scriptures to gain further understanding of the divine, restorative Principle. The revelation came gradually. Little by little, she apprehended the spiritual laws of God, which destroy evil and maintain harmony, formulating them into rules comprehensible to mankind. Over and over again she tested these rules, requiring of each the proof offered by Jesus—healing through spiritual means alone. Nine years after her discovery, Mrs. Eddy finished writing Science and Health, and in that same year the first edition was published.
