"THE PLACE WHEREON THOU STANDEST"

IN studying the account of Moses, given in the Bible, we read that one day as he was tending the flock of his father-in-law, he saw a burning bush which was not consumed by the fire. When he stopped to observe the wonder, he heard God's voice saying(Ex. 3:5), "Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." As Moses listened, God was revealed to him as the great I AM, and he heard the call to higher, holier work. He received God's definite direction, together with the assurance of His presence. However, first Moses had to recognize that the very place whereon he stood was holy ground. Were not his humility, receptivity, and desire for God's direction evidence of the holy ground upon which he stood, and did not this make it possible for him to hear God's voice and understand the revelation of God as the great I AM?

How often in our human experience we rebel because we find ourselves among people not to our liking; and we allow ourselves to be unhappy, discontented, or discouraged. Do we sometimes think it necessary to change our surroundings in order to be able to prove the truth and reflect the harmony and joy we know we should express? Or do we stop to consider that by expressing humility, love, joy, and contentment right where we are, we too can prove that "the place whereon [we stand] is holy ground"?

The teachings of Christian Science make clear that it is where our thoughts are dwelling and what qualities we are expressing that count. A change of place in itself does not solve the problem, but a change of thinking from the false to the true concept of being will clear the way. It will enable us to prove right where we are that the real man of God's creating does express good eternally, and that no place or circumstance can alter that fact. The holy ground we need to find is uplifted, purified thinking—the lifting of thought above the material condition to the truth of being, as revealed in Christian Science.
