I first learned of Christian Science and began to study its teachings earnestly about eight years ago. As a result, my concepts of God and of man were completely transformed, and I learned the true value of man's God-bestowed individuality. I soon found that to assume the name "Christian Scientist" demands proofs of the healing power of Truth.

A few months after Science was introduced to me, an opportunity appeared to test my new-found understanding. I was employed as an associate in a business where my pay was a percentage of the profits. It was a relatively new business and not well established. The first month I received as total pay five dollars. The second month I received thirty-five dollars. The third month my savings were almost depleted. I began to be desperate.

One day I was executing some wood carvings in connection with the business. It was necessary to do this work in a building where I was entirely alone. As I hammered and chiseled, the compelling words of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, came to my thought (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 390, 391): "Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit."
