UNDECEIVED

Too often mental states or physical appearances would make us believe that under some conditions we are not able to be free or to have a happy existence. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 121), "Science shows appearances often to be erroneous, and corrects these errors by the simple rule that the greater controls the lesser.'"

We are safe when we understand that God, the divine Mind, is always in supreme control. Our need is to understand this eternal fact. Neither God nor man can be known through the material senses. Christian Science reveals that man's only real senses are spiritual and that he derives his wisdom and intelligence from divine Mind, the only Mind of man. It is only when we allow erroneous thoughts or mortal mind to control us that images of disease seem to appear in consciousness or on the body. These disordered images would deceive us and cause us to accept temporarily an uncertain outcome. But false images are never real. They are like the mirage one sometimes sees and accepts until the fact is known. A mirage only seems to be where it is not. Man is created in God's image and likeness. There is never an absence of health, because, as a manifestation of divine Love, health is always present; Love's idea ever bears witness to Truth.

Let us suppose that someone allowed himself to be hypnotized, that he was placed in front of a mirror and told he was covered with feathers. Would he not believe that he saw these feathers? Since he had given over his mentality to the control of another, he would see what he had falsely accepted as true. Those who might be standing by certainly would not see or believe what the hypnotized individual saw. For the subject again to see his normal self in the mirror, he would need to be released from the influence of the hypnotist. In Christian Science the hypnotist is mortal mind, alias evil beliefs, which say, "You are a mortal; you are sick; you are sinful; you are defeated; you are about to die."
