In the Preface of our textbook,...
In the Preface of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. vii), "The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal." This passage reminds me of the immense debt of gratitude I owe to Christian Science, for it has given me an answer to a deep, searching question regarding obedience, a question which I had asked since my early childhood.
No one could explain to me what true obedience is, nor where its foundation lies. Most religious instruction bewildered me, because I did not understand it. The only time I felt a sense of security was when passages from the Gospels were read to me. The sayings of our Master I loved, but only when Christian Science came into my life did I begin to learn of God as divine Principle, Love, and of the possibility of expressing infinite good.
I witnessed this divine Principle at work in the healing of a friend who had suffered from an organic disease and whose long search for a cure had been without result. Thereupon the desire to take medicine left me, and I was freed from headaches, for which I had found no cure. This freedom came over fifteen years ago.
I was healed of pneumonia through the consecrated work of a Christian Science practitioner, who asked me to ponder the hymns of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. "This is your medicine," she said. Much purification of thought ensued. The healing took place quickly when I learned to rest in God.
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to God, the great Shepherd, for Christ Jesus and for our beloved Leader, through whose revelation mankind is being led out of chaos and ignorance into spiritual understanding. The Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy has for me fulfilled the Scripture (Isa. 66:13), "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you." Herein I have found counsel for true obedience. My membership in The Mother Church, our periodicals, the opportunity to serve our Cause in a branch church, and the precious gift of class instruction have enriched my life. For The Christian Science Board of Directors and for the devoted practitioners, who with Christian charity help us on, I say, "Thank You, God."—(Mrs.) Marie J. Liggins, London, England.
