Signs of the Times

Rev. E. N. Porter Goff in the Portsmouth Evening News Hampshire, England

Education never ends; what happens in school merely trains the mind so that we may continue to educate ourselves. If we ever cease to educate ourselves we have, in one sense, ceased to live. For the basic aim of education is to make us sensitive to life itself.

For an education which makes us sensitive to life as a whole makes us sensitive to God. ... When we become sensitive to the life of the spirit we see material things, not as ends in themselves to be exploited for power and profit, but as gifts of God to be used for the well-being of all men as the children of God. Thought of in these terms the discoveries of science become not a menace to man's survival, but the means of a fuller and happier life.
