Supporting Our Heralds in Their Mission

In response to a widespread interest in the various editions of The Herald of Christian Science, the Editors are taking this opportunity to explain something of the purpose of the Heralds and the nature of their contents.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave the name to each of our periodicals, lists them and indicates their mission in an item entitled "Something in a Name" in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany." Here she gives the mission of the Heralds, when she speaks of the German edition of the Herald, the only Herald published at that time. To quote (p. 353): "The third, Der Herold der Christian Science, to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth."

The Heralds, surmounting language barriers, are proclaiming "the universal activity and availability of Truth" in nine languages. There is also an edition in English Braille. Naturally, the various language editions—German, French, Scandinavian (Danish-Norwegian-Swedish), Dutch, and Spanish-Portuguese-Italian—are intended primarily for those parts of the Field where the languages of those editions are spoken, and the Heralds, therefore, can in no way replace, or be substituted for, The Christian Science Journal or the Christian Science Sentinel.

Our Heralds are unusual in their make-up, having the English opposite the translation. For this reason they are helping many who wish to learn English in order to be able to read our Leader's writings in the original language. The contents of each edition are selected with the thought of meeting the needs of the readers of that edition. A large portion of the material in the Heralds is reprinted from the Journal and the Sentinel. Occasionally religious articles are also reprinted from The Christian Science Monitor, and from time to time articles and editorials appear which have not previously been published. Articles and testimonies written originally in foreign languages are often included. Therefore the same articles do not appear in all the Heralds.

There are many ways in which the readers of our periodicals can support the Heralds in the fulfilling of their great mission. Some readers may wish to subscribe to them for themselves; others may wish to send subscriptions to individuals or to literature distribution committees of branch churches or societies where the Heralds meet a special need; and still others may prefer to put the amount they would pay for the subscriptions into the Donation Account of The Christian Science Publishing Society for this purpose.

The Journal, Sentinel, and Herald Editorial Department is always glad to answer any inquiry about the Heralds. However, subscriptions, subscription donations, and any questions relating to them should be sent to the Circulation Department of The Christian Science Publishing Society. Correspondence intended for either of these two departments should be addressed to the proper department in The Christian Science Publishing Society, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

Lecture Notice

To ensure that complete lecture notices be printed in the Sentinel, detailed information should reach the Journal, Sentinel, and Herald Editorial Department regarding lectures in the United States and Canada at least seven weeks before the date of the lecture; elsewhere, eight to eleven weeks. When lectures are to be radiocast, it should be so stated, station and frequency in kilocycles being included.

The receipt of all information from the United States and Canada is acknowledged by the Editorial Department. If an acknowledgment is not received within a reasonable time, a duplicate notice should be forwarded.

Rewards of Church Membership

Membership in The Mother Church unfolds rich and satisfying rewards for the earnest student of Christian Science. So also does membership in a branch church with the privilege of active participation therein.

The requirements for membership in The Mother Church are set forth in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy and should be carefully pondered before an application is presented for consideration.

The closing date for the receipt of applications for the next admission of members is October 1, 1956.

Application blanks and any information concerning membership may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal, or from clerks of branch churches and societies. Applications may also be obtained from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

Opportunities for Nursing Candidates at Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatoriums

There is a continuing need of candidates for the Nurses Training Course at the Sanatoriums. Applications are welcome from Christian Scientists who intend to choose Christian Science nursing as a career. There are opportunities for graduates of this course to serve as private nurses in the Field, in nursing homes, and in visiting nurse services, as well as in the Sanatoriums from time to time.

Address inquiries to Personnel Department, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

Submitting Testimonies

Convincing testimonies of healing in Christian Science are welcomed for publication. If possible, they should be typed, triple spaced, on one side of the paper only and with wide margins. A testimony should be concise and include only the important points necessary to tell of the healing. Thus more testimonies can be published. Testimonies should be verified by three members of The Mother Church who either have witnessed the healing or can vouch for the integrity of the testifier. If the testifier is unacquainted with three members, his affidavit may be sufficient, but in this case he should, if possible, obtain verification from one or two members. The testifier should submit the verifications with the testimony. Complete addresses of the testifier and his vouchers should be furnished.

Testimonies should be addressed to Journal, Sentinel, and Herald Editorial Department, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

How You Can Help

When you send a remittance to the Publishing Society, do you always send with your check or money order something to tell us what it is for? The "something" may be a periodical renewal notice, or the part of our bill on which your name and address are typed, or a brief note to tell us how you wish to have the payment used. We shall be grateful for your help in this way.
