PUT ON THE GARMENT OF SALVATION

From the beginning of history human beings have given much attention to the question of that wherewith they should be clothed. They have covered their bodies for warmth, protection, or adornment; and then, apart from all of these considerations, an additional meaning gradually began to be attached to specific kinds of wearing apparel.

To Bible students it is evident that certain types of vesture, differing from the garments used in everyday life, began to be made to clothe special groups of men who were appointed, some even from childhood, to serve God. Much care and ingenuity were exercised in devising robes for those who came to be known as priests. There are many passages in the Old Testament which meticulously describe garments and ornaments intended to denote consecration, purity, and holiness and to be worn by those who were chosen to minister to the spiritual needs of the people and to stand before God.

In the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah, the prophet speaks in symbolic and poetical language of the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness bestowed by God, likening these to the beautiful adornments of the bride and bridegroom.
