About sixteen years ago I suffered...
About sixteen years ago I suffered a great deal from a severe stomach ailment. I took up the study of Christian Science in a sincere effort to be healed.
I attended church regularly and gave up social drinking, smoking, and profanity. In addition, I procured all the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, subscribed to the periodicals, and devoted most of my time to study and application of the truth. Every morning I studied the current Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. I cannot say how long it was before I was healed, because I became so interested in my search for the truth that I was not aware when the healing came. One day I suddenly realized that I had not been troubled for some time and that I had ceased to be afraid of food.
Now that I know the way God's law operates, I attribute this demonstration of divine healing to the fact that I had placed myself completely in God's hands. My gratitude for this healing is so great that
I want to express it continually. I try to do so by continuous devotion to our Cause. Jesus said (Matt. 10:8), "Freely ye have received, freely give." I have been healed of many ailments, including arthritis, athlete's foot, influenza, a sprained ankle, colds, and periodic discomfort. Some of these problems were healed instantly.
While these demonstrations of Truth have meant much to me, I am most grateful for spiritual unfoldment. The following experience has been helpful to me. Although I had served as First Reader in our Christian Science Society, I still hesitated to teach Sunday School. I was bound by a fear of inability to teach children, because I never had been associated with them. However, knowing that my services were needed, I took the problem to God. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 454), "Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action." This truth was proved to me. In a short time I offered to teach, and I enjoyed engaging in this inspiring and fruitful activity.
Through God's guidance I resigned from a position which I had very much enjoyed so that I might devote all my time to Christian Science. I have never regretted this step, nor have I ever missed my former position. I am most grateful for all the periodicals and for the opportunity to distribute them. I always keep in mind the thought that each copy may be the channel for a healing. My gratitude goes out to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who through her consecration gave the wonderful truth to mankind.—(Mrs.) Mae Sims Schluensen, Mattituck, New York.
