It has been said, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." I was able to prove the truth of this statement a few years ago when my husband and I were living in Germany. We arranged to have our vacation in Paris, France, and since we were driving our car, we invited friends to make the trip with us. They knew that I was a Christian Scientist, and they had witnessed a healing through Science of scarlet fever. During the journey, which took nearly two days, our friends asked me many questions about Christian Science. I readily answered them and assured them that when rightly applied Science heals any form of discord.

After our arrival in Paris I awakened about four o'clock one morning in great pain. I immediately arose and started to do some prayerful work, but the pain grew so intense that I could scarcely speak. My husband, who is not a Christian Scientist, was alarmed at my condition and kept requesting that we call for medical aid, but I firmly took my stand against having medical care.

We had arranged to meet our friends in the hotel dining room for lunch that day, but by noon I still had not overcome this condition. Fear filled my thought, and these suggestions came: "Now what will you tell your friends? You spent so much time telling them about the healing power of Christian Science, but how will you explain your condition?" I asked my husband if he would go to the dining room in order to meet the friends and explain to them that I needed to be alone for a while; but he refused, saying that if I was not able to go, he would not go either. I made a great effort and went along.
