DEFENSE AGAINST EPIDEMICS

In the study of Christian Science one learns that his sure defense against all evil, including infectious diseases and epidemics, lies in the recognition of man's true being as a pure, eternal, unchangeable idea of Spirit. The Christian Scientist knows that God's universe consists solely of spiritual ideas, which express only health, harmony, and goodness. Furthermore, God's creation dwells in the atmosphere of Soul, the pure atmosphere, in which no element of mortality, sin, or disease can find admittance or lodgment. The recognition of these and other basic facts of Christian Science destroys completely the false beliefs in and the evil effects of contagion and epidemics.

A study of the ninety-first Psalm in the light of the teachings of Christian Science shows how those who put their whole trust in God and His allness find refuge from the evils of sin, fear, and disease. The Psalmist writes (Ps. 91:9, 10), "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." And then he explains that God will supply His angels to those who trust in His power, that He will keep them safe from all evil and will satisfy them with long life.

The angels of God, Spirit, are the pure thoughts of Life, Truth, and Love, which are ever available to all of us, even in the midst of threats of epidemics or contagion. These angel thoughts replace fear with courage, displace error with truth, sickness with health, and weakness with strength. The only real contagion is good, and he who identifies his thought with God's goodness is a powerful agent for spreading health and for preventing and destroying so-called contagious diseases and epidemics.
