TRUE CONSCIOUSNESS

Because true selfhood is the reflection of God, Mind, man's consciousness includes only that which is perfect, spiritual, and immortal. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276), "Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God."

Mortal consciousness, so called, is a false mental state which argues that physical body and mortal mind are real. But this material sense of oneself and others is the very antipode of real consciousness. It is aggressive mental suggestion, the false belief of a mind apart from God, the lie that life, sensation, and intelligence are in matter. The entertaining of this finite sense is disobedience to the First Commandment, for this sense wrongly boasts of a presence and power antagonistic to the one omnipresent and omnipotent God.

Mortal mind is devoid of intelligence and real consciousness. It is both the accused and the accuser, part and parcel of its own distorted concepts. It is powerless, a supposititious reversal of true consciousness or substance. This false consciousness parades in innumerable masks, such as fear, sin, limitation, sickness, egotism, condemnation, each assuming to reverse the dictum (Gen. 1:27), "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."
