One day I fell and injured my...

One day I fell and injured my back. Someone who saw me fall said, "You hurt yourself!" Unwittingly I resented that assertion, believing she should have said something of a helpful nature.

I attended to all my physical duties throughout the day, but I neglected the metaphysical duties which Christian Science demands of us, one of which is stated in these words of Mrs. Eddy's in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210): "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them." When I thought of the experience at all, it was only to recall what had been said to me. When I went to my room that evening, however, I became acutely aware of pain in my back. Weeks passed without any relief from the pain. One day the suggestion came to me that maybe I should have an X-ray picture made to see if the backbone had been permanently injured. I was being tempted to believe that Christian Science had failed me, even though a practitioner had been giving me treatment.

In that state of mind I went out into some nearby woods to think over the situation while gathering moss for dish gardens. At the edge of the woods several dogs from a neighboring house rushed out, barking furiously at me. Thinking of them as a nuisance, I resented their barking. Then this thought came to me as plainly as if it had been spoken: "If you want those dogs to stop barking at you, change your thinking about them." Recognizing this as a message from Truth and Love, I immediately began thinking of the dogs as God's harmless creatures. Within a few seconds they ceased barking and scampered off in a playful mood.
