SING WITH UNDERSTANDING

"Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding" (Ps. 47:6, 7). Thus the Psalmist enjoins the use of song in glorifying God.

The opportunity for vocal praise is extended to the congregation at each service in the Churches of Christ, Scientist, through the singing of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. The singing of these hymns with understanding serves a valuable purpose in the healing, saving mission of Christian Science. In "Science and Health with Key on the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 234), "Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love—be it song, sermon, or Science—blesses the human family with crumbs of comfort from Christ's table, feeding the hungry and giving living waters to the thirsty."

The shepherds keeping watch over their flocks in Judea became conscious of the advent of the Bethlehem babe through the harmonious announcement of angels. These angelic songs of praise and glory signalized the unfoldment of the Christ, Truth, in the hearts of humanity. The heavenly host is likewise today revealing in consciousness the same divine message from God which is destined to bring peace, happiness, and healing to mankind. The perpetual song of praise and glory is heard and understood by those who are in need of help and who understandingly and trustingly prepare their thoughts for the blessing of God.
